Parents fork out for the new academic year

Parents have to save through the year to ensure children have all their back to school supplies.

Schools across the country reopened last week and many parents have had to fork out a small fortune to gear up their children.

The 2015 academic year officially begun last Wednesday and more than a million pupils are expected to return to classroom.

A local mom of four says buying back to school supplies for her children is never cheap.

“My daughter is going to grade 6.

“It’s cost me about R2,500 including books, school shoes and a new school uniform.”

She says in order to cope financially, she saves throughout the year so that all her children will have what they need for the new school year come January.

Another mom explained how she tries not to break the bank with buying school uniforms and stationary.

“The uniforms cost us more than R1,000.

“It costs a lot because you must still buy the sports clothing as well.”

Retailers say business is booming, as usual, with back to school purchasing.
