Metro unleashes peace corps for the festive season

Helping to keep the peace this holiday season.

With the unleashing of the new Peace Corps, recently, the metro is gearing up to keep the metro safe this holiday season.

Exactly 750 Peace Corps members were passed out at Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa to increase the EMPD’s visibility and to curb crime during the holidays in the metro.

The men and women in the green uniform (Peace Corps) will assist in the city’s crime prevention, by-law enforcement and social crime prevention efforts.

The peace Corps will be assisting in reporting service delivery hiccups like power outages and water and sewer pipe bursts as and when they get exposed to such.

According to the metro’s executive mayor, Clr Mondi Gungubele, with the festive season in full swing, there would not have been a better time to unleash these members onto the streets of Ekurhuleni.

“We all know that while the festive is seen unequivocally as a time for relaxation and celebration of a year that was, it has also become one of the most notorious periods for crime in the country.

“As communities celebrate in peace, thugs prowl our streets looking for the nearest target to attack,” Gungubele said.

He added that to make Ekurhuleni a safer place to stay, live and play – the metro is always looking at various interventions to bring peace and stability in the area.
