In a bid to ensure important information about deceased people has been correctly recorded, the metro is embarking on a verification process of those who are buried in its cemeteries.
Through this process the metro is aiming to update its books with the correct information of the dead and is, therefore, calling upon family members, funeral directors and residents to assist in this exercise of re-capturing data. Families and undertakers should have the following information on hand when calling in for verification: the name of the deceased, the date of the funeral and the grave number.
The municipality is moving towards implementing an electronic storage system for such information and is beginning with the re-capturing of data of the deceased buried in the following cemeteries during the stated periods:
- Boksburg Old Cemetery, Commissioner Street, Boksburg, 1932 to 1964;
- Buyafuthi Cemetery, Hospital Road, Buyafuthi 1986 to 1989;
- Thomas Titus Nkobi (South Park Cemetery), Elsburg, 1997 to 2011;
- Ehlanzeni, Ehlanzeni Section, Tembisa, 1991 to 1992;
- Vusimuzi, Vusimuzi Section, Tembisa, 1991 to 1992;
- Ililiba, Ililiba Cemetery, Tembisa, 1986 to1987;
- Katlehong Schoeman, behind Katlehong Station, Katlehong, 1972 to 1976;
- Mooifontein A and B, Tortelduif Street, Birch Acres, Kempton Park, 2007 to 2009;
- Mooifontein C year, Andrew Mapheto Street, Tembisa, 2002 to 2006;
- Old Katlehong, behind Katlehong Station, Katlehong, 1992 to 1996;
- Olifantsfontein Cemetery, Erf46/ Erf78/ Erf385, Olifantsfontein, any burial to date;
- Somhlolo Cemetery, Kanana Street, Etwatwa, Benoni, any burial to date;
- Phumulani Cemetery, Holfontein Reef Road, Benoni, 1992 to 2011;
- Thokoza Cemetery, end of Cemetery Road, Thokoza, 1991 to 93 and 2000 to 2008;
- Thokoza Schoeman, end of Cemetery Road, Thokoza, burial before April 2006;
- Las Vegas, corner of Esselen Drive and Main Street, any burial to date;
- Mgababa Cemetery, Ward 26, Putfontein, any burial to date;
- Ezekiel (Geluksdal), Romanella Street, Brakpan, any burial to date;
- Zonkezizwe Cemetery, Magagula Heights, any burial to date.
