What does the Vusa Umuntu Community Service do for its local community?

The Vusa Umuntu Community Service (VUCS) is a group dedicated to helping communities in need.

The group focuses on skills development, employment creation and crime prevention, with the objective of achieving community upliftment.

The VUCS was founded 18 months ago.

“In this short time we have worked hard on our visibility in the community,” explained Thabile Sibeko.

“We have participated in the child abuse awareness campaigns hosted by the Cluster Crime Prevention Unit of the SAPS.

“We have worked in conjunction with the Daveyton Heart Atlantic Club and partnered with the metro on a number of events.”

The VUCS has also set up two soccer teams, catering for the under-12 and under-19 age groups, as well as an open netball team consisting of different age groups, ranging from 16 years and older.

“Both the soccer and netball teams have participated in local tournaments and are continuing to practise and participate in events that uplift the communities in which they reside,” said Sibeko.

Like many organisations, the VUCS looks to its local community to get involved and help with various projects.

What does the service need from the community?

When asked why they decided to form VUCS, member Sibeko explained: “We saw a need in our communities.”

The group is currently busy with its latest fund-raising project, which will see the needs of underprivileged school pupils addressed.

“We identified underprivileged school kids in the area and we felt the need to intervene,” said Sibeko about the organisation’s current project.

“Our first step was to identify the problem and see what we needed to supply; we decided on school uniforms.

“Our purpose is to ensure that every child is confident with their appearance when going to school in order to achieve great results.

“We are so passionate about preparing these young ones for 2015 because we believe that the future of the country is in their hands and there can only be good leaders when people are well educated.

“With the community’s assistance we can build unshaken and strong leaders in our society.”
