Metro investigates terrible smell

What is causing the terrible smell?

The Germiston City News received an email from Meisie Harrington, an Estera area resident.

Harrington would like to know what is causing the foul smell in the area.

She described the situation: “Residents experience the terrible smell almost daily in the Estera area.

“It’s described as the smell of old engine oil, and mostly occurs in the late afternoon.

“This has been going on for weeks now.”

The GCN approached the metro to try and find out what could be causing this terrible smell and what could be done to get rid of it.

“An investigation was conducted and no signs of oil in the area or any smells were found, even when it was raining or overcast,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro’s department of communications and brand management.

“We have, however experienced a strong organic smell coming from the informal settlement in the area.

“This is strongest early in the morning and late in the afternoon, when travelling from Germiston towards Boksburg.

“It may be caused by cooking fires.”
