EMPD officers tackle illegal trading in Katlehong

Illicit items confiscated and more regulatory signs erected around Katlehong shopping complex.

Soon, illegal trading and pedestrians denied access to pavements due to an influx of vendors will be a thing of the past in Katlehong.

Patrolling EMPD officers and Peace Corps members from the Katlehong Precinct recently embarked on operations where they cleaned and enforced the municipal by-laws.

They are also monitoring Kgotso, Hospital and Kumalo roads (around the Letsoho shopping complex/centre).

“Dealers who were in possession of fake goods decided to run when they were approached by our EMPD officers and they left their items behind,” said Insp Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD media liaison officer.

Hawkers take up most of this pavement in Katlehong. The EMPD has been clearing the area of illegal hawkers during recent by-law operations.

“Our field marshals confiscated 5 000 counterfeit DVDs, 25 cartons of illicit Blue Mega, Sevilles, Everest, Westleigh, Dullahs and Remington Gold cigarettes, a 5kg box of Jockey underwear, Alaska, Nike, Puma, Supreme and Samson caps, packs of Adidas, Puma and Nike bags, trousers labelled Levis, Guess, Uzzi, Diesel and Puma.

“All recovered counterfeit goods will be handed over to departments dealing with illegitimate items.”

This is an ongoing operation and where “hawkers prohibited” signs have been placed and a yellow line (as a demarcation on a pavement) painted, officers on patrol will continue to enforce the by-laws.
