Metro continues to issue wheelie bins

Less illegal dumping, less rats, thanks to bigger and better bins.

Daveyton resident Phineas Morereane is pleased to finally have received his 240lt refuse bin from the metro.

Now he has enough storage space to contain his household’s rubbish until the next collection day, and to keep pestering rats out of his yard.

Soon his neighbourhood will benefit from cleaner surroundings because the need to dump rubbish in the nearest field would have diminished.

Rodents will also have no choice but to vacate the area, because they will no longer have readily available food sources from heaps of illegally dumped garbage or permeable dustbins.

“I am pleased by the municipality’s initiative to provide the community with bigger bins,” said Morereane.

“I hope their introduction will minimise the number of rodents, because the small bins get filled up way before the day of collection and rodents easily climb into them to get food.”

The metro began with the mass roll-out of the bins in Nigel and Duduza during the 2008/09 financial year, followed by Tembisa, Wattville and Actonville.

Distribution is currently taking place in Daveyton, to be followed by Etwatwa.

The municipality has close to 434 000 bins still to be delivered in Kempton Park, Benoni, Springs, Boksburg South, Palm Ridge, Katlehong and Germiston.

Next in line is Springs, then Benoni.

Distribution details will be announced by the municipality’s service provider when they are in the area.

Residents can contact their ward councillor for clarity on venues and distribution times.

Only one wheelie bin will be allocated to each household and residents taking more than one bin should be mindful that they will be charged an additional R120.36 (excluding VAT) per month.

Residents are requested to bring a copy of their identity document, as well as their Ekurhuleni municipal services account when collecting a bin.
