Jilted lover charged with arson

Woman sets fire to shacks in act of revenge.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested by the Primrose police and charged with arson, in the Marathon informal settlement, recently.

Officers were alerted to the incident when a complainant came forward, alleging that he and his girlfriend had been asleep when, at around 9pm, he heard people screaming that his shack was on fire.

He and his girlfriend jumped out of bed and rushed outside to discover that his brother’s shack was also on fire.

“The man alleged that he was told by a member of the community that his brother’s girlfriend had set fire to the shacks,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

Dedicated detectives followed several leads on the matter and, two days after the incident was reported, the suspect was arrested and detained at Primrose Police Station.

“We are appealing to our community to seek help when there are problems in their relationships; a troubled relationship is no reason to commit crime, because they will be arrested,” added Maome.

The suspect appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court, where the case was postponed for trial.
