Still no post in residents’ postboxes

When will we start getting post again?

Residents in Germiston are still not receiving their post.

The GCN has had numerous calls from frustrated residents who want to know when the postal service will be back to normal.

Albemarle resident Dawie Botha said: “I am getting extremely frustrated.

“I am waiting for certain items in the post that I need urgently, but I seem to be waiting in vain.

“The post office needs to do something about this situation now, and to rectify it.”

His sentiments were echoed by a Dinwiddie resident, who does not wish to be named.

She said: “It feels like our building has dropped off the face of the earth.

“We haven’t received post for over two months.”

A Primrose resident told the GCN that they haven’t received anything for the past two weeks and wants to know what is going on.

Renette Dreyer said: “The postal delivery has been erratic for most of the year.

“I heard that they are on strike again and this time the workers are being violent attacking the main depot and breaking into post offices.”

The GCN asked Johan Kruger from the communications division at the SA Post Office for urgent comment on the matter.

At the time of going to press he had not given us any comment as to when the postal service would be back to normal, or if there is once again a strike and whether or not strikers were breaking into the depot and post offices.

In his previous comment to the GCN he said that SA Post Office staff had been working over weekends to deliver the backlog of mail on the East Rand which had built up after the dismissal of about 30 per cent of mail delivery staff in the area – as these individuals had failed to report for duty.

“Management at executive level has become involved to make sure that the delivery plans are effective and implemented smoothly.

“Apart from the backlog, the regular mail that is coming into the system is also delivered.

“Mail is delivered by postmen in the Germiston area daily, and each postman delivers considerably more articles per day than the national average in order to work off the backlog.

“In other areas, where there is a shortage of staff, each postman’s walk is delivered every second day,” he said.

“Mail at the Benoni depot is receiving priority since this is the area with the largest backlog.”

He told the GCN that the situation was expected to be back to normal by August 18.

In the Germiston area this has clearly not happened and residents feel that the post office should do something drastic to get the postal service back to normal.
