Pavement puppies rescued by GCN and SPCA

Illegal puppy sellers stopped in their tracks.

Two gorgeous puppies were saved from the clutches of illegal dog sellers, on Thursday morning.

GCN editor Melissa Hart noticed the men trying to sell the puppies at the corner of Castor and Ceres roads, in Primrose, on her way to work.

She contacted the Germiston SPCA and told them what was going on.

Then, accompanied by GCN sales consultant Chantall Goosen, Hart returned to the scene to find the men still trying to sell the dogs.

Goosen asked the men how much they wanted for the puppies and was told R200 for both.

Hart told the men that what they were doing was illegal and they said they needed to sell the puppies to get money for food.

They added that they had been sent to sell the animals by one of their fathers, as he no longer wanted them.

However, their tale changed upon arrival of Jade Nel, a trainee inspector at the Germiston SPCA.

The men told Nel they had found the puppies walking around the settlement where they lived and had decided to sell them.

It is believed that they stay in the Marathon informal settlement.

Nel warned the men that what they were doing was illegal and they agreed to sign the puppies over to the SPCA.

The little bundles of fun were taken to the society’s kennels, where they will remain in the pound for seven days, in case anyone comes to claim them.

It is not clear at this stage whether the puppies were stolen from the informal settlement or from the suburbs, or if they did, in fact, belong to the men.

If the puppies are not claimed they will be put up for adoption.

The Germiston SPCA can be contacted on 011 825-5033 for more information.
