MMC for community safety recognises exceptional feat by EMPD Public Order Policing Unit

EMPD Unit commended for their sterling work.

The disappearance of three-year-old Cuburne van Wyk, from outside his parents’ home, in Reiger Park, on Women’s Day, and the discovery of his partly burnt body in a bush behind a dump area a day later, galvanised members of the EMPD Public Order Policing Unit into action.

They vowed to track down the person named as the suspect and, three days after the little boy’s disappearance, members of EMPD, with the assistance of the Reiger Park community, were able to apprehend the suspect.

He was arrested in Piercy Avenue, Lambton, on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 13.

The MMC for Community Safety, Clr Mthuthuzeli Siboza, decided to express his appreciation for this remarkable achievement.

He invited the POP members to a function, where he thanked them in person and sat down to breakfast with them.

Acting chief of police Johan Friedlander, deputy chief of police operations Goodman Mzolo and acting director specialised services Ngamlane Nkosi all attended the function.

Siboza commended the unit members for sheer commitment and dedication to their work by working around the clock and succeeding in tracking down the suspect.

The Public Order Policing members, as a token of appreciation, were each handed a sports bag and a USB flash drive-cum pen, courtesy of the MMC and EMPD senior management team.
