Copper worth R13 000 recovered

Man nabbed with stolen copper.

Police officers from Elsburg recently set up vehicle checkpoints at scrap metal dealers, in Wadeville.

They did this after receiving a tip-off from a concerned member of the public.

Upon searching one of the suspected vehicles, they discovered copper, believed to be stolen.

The bakkie the officers searched was from Marble Hall and the driver could not produce receipts for the copper or documentation detailing to who it belonged.

“The police questioned him about why he had come so far to sell the copper and he could not give them a satisfactory reason,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

The copper weighed 2 540kg and is worth R13 000.

The suspect, aged 51, was arrested.
