Armed robbers get away with R145 000 worth of cigarettes

Armed robbers caught after cigarette robbery.

On Monday, July 28, the Primrose police were able to arrest five men involved in an armed robbery at a business in Sunnyrock, in Primrose.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 29 years old, were charged with armed robbery, after they managed to get away with R145 000 worth of cigarettes.

Officers were first alerted to the robbery when a delivery man came to the Primrose Police Station to report the incident.

He explained that he had been making deliveries to a business in Sunnyrock.

“Upon his arrival he noticed two men sitting in a silver Audi, but he assumed they were employees,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The victim added that he had helped to staff of the business to offload the boxes of cigarettes when a man approached him and ordered him into the warehouse.

“The victim claimed that the man who approached him was one of the men he’d seen sitting in the Audi,” Maome added.

The man began to hit the victim and then produced a firearm.

“The victim told police officers that there were another five men waiting inside the warehouse, all of whom had guns,” said Maome.

“The men loaded 19 of the recently unpacked cigarette boxes into a silver Kia panel van, before making their getaway in the panel van, as well as two Audis.”

After following several leads, detectives were able to trace and arrest all five men believed to be involved in the armed robbery.The suspects were found in Berea, Soweto and Tembisa.

“The station commander thanks everyone who was involved in this arrest for their hard work,” said Maome.

The five men will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
