Two men arrested outside of Stone Arch Estate.

Following the GCN’s unconfirmed reports of two men being arrested at the Stone Arch Estate in Castleview, Germiston on Saturday, July 19.

This morning, July 21, the Germiston police confirmed that two men were indeed arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and goods on Saturday.

Members of the Germiston SAPS with the help of EMPD officers arrested the two, aged 28 and 33 respectively, at the entrance of the Stone Arch Estate which is located at the corner of Brookhill and Sunstone roads in Castleview.

“Officers were on patrol in Sector Five when they heard a report that EMPD were in pursuit of a vehicle from Germiston,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, on behalf of the Germiston cluster commander.

“The chase had begun when EMPD officers had spotted a Volkswagen Golf that a tracker company was looking for in Germiston on the corner of Simmer and President streets.

“As they approached the Golf two men abandoned the vehicle and jumped into a silver Volkswagen Polo and sped away.

“The EMPD officers then gave chase and chased the Polo towards Katlehong.

“The Sector Five police vehicle waited at the corner of Black Reef Road and Hatfield Street to act as backup should the EMPD officers need assistance.

Waiting officers noticed the Volkswagen Polo fitting the description approaching at high speed.

They attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle did not even slow down and the Germiston SAPS joined the chase.

At the corner of Brookhill and Sunstone roads, in Castleview, the vehicle’s driver lost control and hit into the pavement.

This collision caused the vehicle to come to a standstill.

The driver opened the door and ran into Stone Arch Estate.

EMPD officers gave chase on foot and were able to arrest him, while the second man was arrested by the Germiston SAPS officers while he was trying to run away from the estate.

The driver was taken into the estate, where officer searched his home.

Officers found three sets of car keys, one of which one belonged to an Audi parked on the premises.

Officers also found a laptop hidden in a black bag.

The Audi’s details were processed and it was discovered that it was reported stolen at the Rosebank Police Station.

Upon inspection of the silver Polo officers found three computer boxes, three flat screen televisions, three desktop computers and three laptops.

After processing the scene EMPD officers travelled back to the Golf that had been abandoned by the suspects in Germiston.

They searched the motor vehicle and found a 9mm pistol with five rounds concealed in a black bag.

Officers were able to confirm that:

  •  The Golf was taken from Sunninghill during a business robbery in July 2014.
  •  The Polo was taken during a house robbery in Bramley in July 2014.
  •  The Audi was taken during a business robbery in Rosebank in May 2014.

After further investigation the officers discovered that the firearm, found in the Golf, was taken from a security officer in Hillbrow.

“The cluster commander Brig Phumla Mdlankomo thanks all the members who contributed to the success of this operation, especially those who put their lives at risk when confronting these criminals.

“A joint effort, with both SAPS and EMPD, will make our fight against crime more fruitful,” said Maome.

“Let us keep on making our cluster a safer place by arresting all criminals,” said Brig Phumla Mdlankomo.

Both suspects were detained at the Germiston Police Station and will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
