Help to feed the children

Help keep Epworth's children fed this winter.

As the cold begins to really bite, Epworth Children’s Village is appealing to the community to help them put food on the table.

From July 18 to 28, the home will be holding a food drive.

In honour of the legacy Nelson Mandela left behind, Epworth is asking the community to unite and to help the home put food on its shelves this winter.

They have adopted the following motto: “A can… Can feed a child”.

The following items are needed:

  • Tinned foods: baked beans, sweet corn, canned fruit, fish (in tomato sauce – no chili), tuna, jam, mixed vegetables and tomato and onion mix.
  • Other items needed: cereals, coffee, flour, Jungle Oats, macaroni, Maltabella porridge, pasta, peanut butter, rice, sugar, syrup, tea and toilet paper.

Epworth has nine houses for which they have to cater.

During the week they supply a cooked meal (supper), and every week each house receives a weekly basket to provide them with basics to cover breakfast and lunch.

Any treats would also be welcome.

All kinds of groceries are welcome, from dry goods and tinned food to condiments, cleaning materials and toilet paper.

If collecting cans is not your thing and you want to do some physical community work, you can get involved in the following two projects:

  • Garden project:

The training room has a small garden that needs lots of work in terms of landscaping, planting flowers, tidying up edges, etc.

All materials and tools must be provided by the volunteer.

  • Vegetable garden project:

If you have green fingers this is for you — the garden needs to be cleaned, fertilised and made ready for the next crops.

For more information on the projects, or to donate, contact Roberta Ingrato on 011 827-5732/33/5860 or email to admin@epworthvillage.org.za

Epworth Children’s Village is situated at 47 Ninth Avenue, Lambton Extension One.
