Power supply severely constrained

Eskom urges customers to use electricity sparingly.

The national power grid is currently severely constrained due to high electricity usage and the unavailability of some of Eskom’s generating units rendering the power system vulnerable as we draw closer to the period of high electricity demand in the evening.

The power grid is expected to be severely strained particularly today between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

Eskom calls on all consumers to delay the usage of heaters and to switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances as the risk of load-shedding is high during this period.

Commercial customers, particularly shopping centres and office blocks, can make the biggest difference by switching off non-essential lights and not to leave office equipment such as photocopiers and computers in standby mode after hours.

Eskom will utilise all necessary emergency resources at its disposal but should the demand not decrease, load shedding will be implemented as a last resort to protect the national grid.

In the event that load-shedding becomes necessary, Eskom will use the published load shedding schedules which are available on the Eskom website (https://loadshedding.eskom.co.za) for Eskom customers.

Eskom customers can also contact the customer call centre on 0860 037 566.

Municipal customers are urged to contact their local authorities, or visit www.ekurhuleni.gov.za to download a load-shedding schedule for your area.

Eskom will provide regular updates on the status of the power system through all media platforms.
