Knitting marathon a success

Looking forward to the record attempt.

Breakthrough Creative Events and Marketing, a division of Dunamis International Family Church, a non-profit organisation, will be hosting a 24-hour knitting marathon on May 23 and 24.

The original goal of the event was to knit as many scarves as possible in a 24-hour period, in an attempt to break the current world record.

Sadly, the organisation did not realise that the application process would take six to eight weeks to complete; for this reason the actual attempt at the world record will take place at a later stage.

The 24-hour event instead acted as training for when they try to beat the record and attempt to knit over 1 800 scarfs.
Each scarf knitted was a standard metre long, but the width, colour, design and wool texture varied.

“Our original thought was that everyone who attended would knit a standard scarf that we had seen in an existing campaign,” said the director of the organisation, Dr Phillicia Bester.

“The campaign is dedicated to donating a scarf to less fortunate child, so they can keep warm at school during the winter months.

“But people really got creative with the wool they brought and the designs they decided to knit, and it worked out beautifully.”

“We feel the event was a great success; it allowed us to see the interest people have in the event and what we will need to beat the current world record,” said marketing and events coordinator Natasha Theron.

Approximately 130 people attended the event that started at 6pm on Friday, May 23, and many knitted late into the evening.

“We had a great time, chatting, watching movies, playing games and of course knitting,” said Theron.

The organisation is pleased with the community’s support of the event and look forward to taking on the world record attempt when their application is approved.

The scarfs knitted at the event will be distributed to people in need of them.
