Another Ekurhuleni nurse was honoured

Linmed nurse wins top award.

Yet an during the International Nurses Day celebrations.

Sister Marian Grobbelaar, a nurse at the Netcare Linmed Hospital, was one of six winners of the 2014 Florence Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing.

Grobbelaar received the award on International Nurses Day (May 12).

She received a R6 000 cash prize and a trophy.

Over 2 000 people were nominated for the prestigious award, from 335 hospitals in the country.

Nursing since 1975, Grobbelaar was nominated for her high level of dedication to each and every patient.

Her unit manager, Wanda Pretorius, described how Marian would go out of her way to minimise the waiting times for a leukaemia sufferer who needed blood transfusions every six to eight weeks.

“Marian proactively arranged an order with the blood bank, so that the patient would not need to leave work and come and wait, a process which can take between 12 and 24 hours,” said Pretorius.

Grobbelaar said she was destined to be a nurse.

“All I want is to see my patients get better and make sure they are comfortable at all times,” said Grobbelaar.

“That’s my life, I was born to be a nurse.

“You are either a nurse or you are not.

”I always wanted to help others.

”I like working with people and being there for them when they need me.”
