DA claims ANC is putting residents in danger

DA says ANC are the worst litterbugs of all.

The DA in Ekurhuleni says it is deplorable that the ruling party is not only ignoring the laws of the land but is opening the metro up to liability claims by putting residents in danger.

DA councillors Veronica Dyson and Jackie Reilly have expressed their concern about the reckless and indiscriminate postering by the ANC throughout all areas of the metro.

“Not only have posters been plastered over walls and electrical boxes but also hung on trees and street signs.

“Worst of all the ruling party has shown its total disregard for the rules and regulations governing elections by painting tree trucks, street signs, curbs and high mast light poles in their party colours and the letters ‘ANC’.

“All of this is blatantly illegal in terms of the metro’s by-laws and against the rules governing campaign posters set out by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC),” said Dyson and Reilly.

“This comes from the party which holds the majority in a government that supposedly cares about the environment and pays lip service regularly to campaigns against littering.

“Even more worrying are the posters glued onto newly-installed electrical boxes, covering all of the warning stickers underneath.

“This vandalism of metro assets, each box having cost R30 000, is a danger to residents as the warnings are no longer visible.

“This means that Ekurhuleni could be liable for any death or injury that could come about as a result of contact with the boxes.”
