Fallen heroes remembered

Annual "Wits Week" Parade and Commemoration Service held.

The annual “Wits Week” Parade and Commemoration Service showcased the Witwatersrand Rifles Regiment at its best, last Saturday.

The event took place at “Fort Bear”, the regiment’s headquarters.

During the proceedings Col John Job (honorary colonel) performed a changing of command ceremony.

Lieut-Col Louis Malakoane stepped down as commanding officer and Lieut-Col Simon Mooketsi took command.

In his keynote address Job said: “I am pleased to see how well-dressed the soldiers are in their traditional dress.

“I applaud the veterans who took part in the march past and, to the company preparing for deployment to Sudan in October: you must remember who you are and what regiment you come from,” he said.

Outgoing commander Lieut-Col Louis Malakoane said the members of the regiment must focus on the future and they must remember that Sudan is a dangerous place.

The new commanding officer of the regiment, Lieut-Col Simon Mooketsi, said it was a great pleasure for him to have been given the responsibility of commanding the regiment.

“I promise good leadership, with no pampering, and I will be setting a high standard and making sure this standard is met,” he said.

“I will endeavour to improve and enhance the efficiency of the regiment and uphold the traditions.”

The regiment also honoured Marna Fritz with the Brigadier Jack Bester Shield, which is awarded annually to the member of the Witwatersrand Rifles who has, more than any other member, rendered exceptional service in support of the regiment and its objectives.

The commemoration service was rounded off with the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph, and a quiet moment remembering those who had lost their lives in battle.
