When will the refuse be collected?

Germiston residents feel the effect of the SAMWU strike.

During the course of the week the GCN received calls from concerned residents, who wonder when their piles of refuse will be collected.

When asked for answers, the metro’s department of communications and brand management released the following statement: “The march by SAMWU trade union members, which took place on February 14, had an effect on refuse removal on the day.

“The metro will, however, continue to collect refuse as per the calendar.

“All waste will be removed, as high volumes will be expected.”

The DA’s Clr Graham Gersbach further explained the situation when he said: “The refuse collection workers are not working overtime to resolve the backlog, so if residents’ collection day was missed during the week their next collection day will be the same day, next week.

“The refuse collection workers worked until 3.30pm each day last week and anything not collected will only be collected next week.

“Management advised that they will collect whatever is left out and you must complain if you don’t get your scheduled collection next week.”

There is little left for the residents of Germiston to do but wait and hope that the piles of refuse on numerous streets in Germiston will be collected.
