What a mess!

Sewage continues to flow in Marlands.

The sewer line in the park situated between Pine and Wit streets, in Marlands, is still leaking.

The GCN ran a story about the matter on September 13, 2013, and, according to Ross Jordan, a resident in the area, the pipe has still not been repaired.

“The sewer pipe is still spewing sewage into our river systems,” he said.

“When will someone wake up and realise that our drinking water is being polluted?”

Sewage is still flowing unabated into the dam in Marlands.

On September 15, last year, Jordan received an email from Oupa Matshate, Ekurhuleni’s chief engineer: water and sanitation, stating that the sewer effluent overflow had been fixed.

He added that they were awaiting delivery of material to start relaying another pipeline, adjacent to the existing one, considering the condition of the existing pipeline.

“I have made arrangements with the contractor to monitor the pipe continually, to avoid sewer spills while waiting for the delivery of the pipes,” he said.

“We have appointed another service provider for the rehabilitation of the wetland.”

However, it appears that nothing has changed with regard to the leaking pipe and the sewage which leaks unabated into the water system.

The GCN asked the metro for comment on the matter and Themba Gadebe from the metro’s department of communications and brand management said, “Our maintenance team has been on site but is still battling to clear the line.

“Arrangements have been made to secure more resources in order to clear the blockage.

“We anticipate that the blockage will be cleared by mid-week if everything goes as planned.”

Gadebe added that the pipe is still leaking due to the fact that the illegal miners in the area use the line and damage it.

“The metro plans to upgrade the line and ensure that security measures are put in place to minimise the challenge posed by the illegal miners,” Gadebe said.

“After clearing the blockage we will ensure that the section of the spruit affected by the overflow is rehabilitated.”
