SAPS shown appreciation

Fun day celebrated the Germiston SAPS.

The Germiston SAPS were shown appreciation, last Saturday, at the first ever SAPS Appreciation Day, in the city.

The event was held at the Germiston City Sports Club.

The Germiston policing sector is divided into five sectors, three of which were in attendance on the day, namely, Sector Three (Delville), Sector Four (Lambton/Klip) and Sector Five (Din-Al-View).

The goal was to raise enough funds to upgrade the Germiston Police Station by painting certain areas, clearing up the gardens for minimal upkeep, cleaning of the vehicles etc.

An amount of R2 100 was raised on the day, which will go towards this project.

The project ran from 9am to 3pm and, during the course of the event, the SAPS and EMPD K9 units gave very informative demonstrations on what our four-legged friends can do for us.

“It was amazing and they seemed to be able to count and read, although I know this is not possible, but demonstrates the obedience and training that is put in to make such a wonderful team,” said Jean Ingram, Germiston Central CPF treasurer.

“How each handled different scenarios to ensure utmost safety was astounding and certainly something for everyone to see.”

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services members and ER24 paramedics simulated an accident scene, and emergency services showed how to extricate a patient from a vehicle using the Jaws of Life and by removing the doors of the vehicle to enable paramedics to safely remove and treat the patient.

Ballistic Body Armour raffled tickets for a bullet-proof vest and the money raised from the raffle was donated to the CPF.

They also demonstrated a bullet-proof vest for the dogs in the K9 unit.

“The dog used, Rocco, seemed so proud to wear his vest, even though it was scorching hot,” said Ingram.

Pick n Pay Hazelpark donated 150 vouchers to the value of R100 each for the operational police members, Debonairs Lambton donated five vouchers of R100 each for the sector commanders and Ocean Basket donated three vouchers of R100, each which were given to Germiston SAPS station commander Brig Samuel Thambo, Lieut-Col Phiwe Ndwandwe and Paul Moloi, from Ekurhuleni Emergency Services.

Pick n Pay Lambton donated a voucher to the value of R250 which was given to WO André de Jager, the Germiston SAPS communications officer, who arranged both K9 units for the day.
