Son assaulted, police don’t help

Mother fed-up with police's lack of service.

After her son Shondre was brutally assaulted, Gerdview resident Quintella Botha wants answers from the Primrose SAPS.

Shondre was attacked at the Caltex service station in Homestead, on October 6, at about 2.30pm, when he and a friend went to put in petrol.

“He was minding his own business, sitting in his vehicle, when a man, not known to him, got out of a car and approached him,” said Quintella.

“When he reached him, he punched Shondre in the face, got back into his car and drove away.”

After the punch, Shondre jumped out of his own vehicle and ran after the man, to find out why he had punched him.

The man stopped his vehicle and got out of it.

“He then attacked Shondre again, punching him and kicking him when he fell to the ground,” Quintella said.

“He then got back into his car and drove away, leaving my son in a critical condition.”

An ambulance was called, as Shondre was unconscious, and he was taken to Life Roseacres Clinic for treatment.

Hearing about the incident Quintella rushed to the scene.

She told the GCN that when the Primrose SAPS arrived on the scene, they advised her to go to the Primrose Police Station to report the incident, as they could not do a report and open a case on the scene.

“I feel that vital information was lost, as the police did not record any witnesses’ information and didn’t even ask to look at the video footage from the garage’s cameras,” Quintella said.

“I then went to the Primrose Police Station to open a case of assault, since which I have not heard a word from the police.”

Quintella added that she obtained the video footage from the garage and, from this, got the registration number of the vehicle and gave it to the police.

She said they often saw Shondre’s attacker in the area and managed to find a physical address, where he has been seen.

They also took this information to the police.

“There is no communication whatsoever from the Primrose police,” Quintella said.

“I have called numerous times and I get no response from them.

“Is the culprit ever going to be arrested, and will something done about this serious assault?”

Const Styles Maome, communications officer from the Primrose SAPS said: “The investigation of this matter is continuing.

“The investigating officer gave the following feedback regarding the complaints received.

“The accused’s address is unknown and the video footage taken at the service station is poor.

“The registration number given to the investigating officer leads to a vehicle belonging to a man who lives in Soweto and is not related to the case.

“We encourage the complainant to come forward and give the investigating officer more information, if she has any.

“If she is not happy with the investigating officer, she can visit the station and speak to either the branch commander or the station commander.”
