Lack of dumping sites in the city

Where to dump garden refuse.

Lambton resident Hennie Jordaan told the GCN he has nowhere to dump his garden refuse.

“There is a lack of mini-dumping sites in the Germiston area, especially in the Lambton side of the city,” he said.

Jordaan said that he used to use the Elspark mini-dumping site but about a year ago it was closed for “upgrading”, and the gates as still firmly locked.

He added that the site in Albemarle has also been closed and now the closest site that he can visit is in Marlands, which is quite a drive from Lambton.

Jordaan also mentioned that the large dumping site in Driehoek is not good for people with small vehicles, as the steel and debris in the ground often leave vehicles with flat tyres.

Although he approves of the upgrade to the Marlands site, he said it is inconvenient to travel there and the lack of a mini-dumping site in his area is going to promote illegal dumping, as people do not want to drive too far to dump their garden refuse.

“I think the metro thinks that some parts of Germiston must just be happy with having nothing,” he said.

Sam Modiba, spokesman for the metro, said: “The metro is currently considering a master plan to develop the public off-loading and recycling facilities in the entire metro.

“The nearest dumping site is Simmer and Jack, situated in Johan Rissik Street.

“While the metro has plans to address the provision of public off-loading facilities, residents are encouraged to not be involved in illegal dumping activities, but to rent bulk containers from the metro for the removal of refuse and other rubble.”

“Residents can visit the following dumping sites:

  •  Simmer and Jack disposal site in Johan Rissik Street.
  •  Marlands mini disposal site in Heidelberg Road, off the R554 Brakpan Road.
  • Palm Ridge mini disposal site at the corner of Satarius and Whiteker streets, off Blackthorn Road.
