Katlehong SAPS on the ball

The Katlehong police recently arrested a number of people.

The Katlehong SAPS Visible Policing Unit arrested 20 people recently, during a stop-and-search operation.

The arrests were made for various crimes, including, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, fraud, the selling of liquor without a licence and being in possession of dagga.

A 36-year-old man was nabbed at a roadblock, in Mofokeng Section, for being in possession of two pistols and 11 rounds of live ammunition.

While the police were conducting a roadblock in Thutong Road, they noticed a white Toyota Corolla, with four occupants.

The driver of the vehicle turned around before getting to the roadblock.

The police became suspicious and followed the vehicle for about 300m.

The car stopped and the three passengers got out and fled on foot.

“It is alleged that one of the men who was spotted running away had a gun in his hand,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, communications officer for the Katlehong Police.

“The officers gave chase, but the three men disappeared into the houses nearby.”

The driver of the Toyota was searched and was found to be in possession of a 9mm pistol and six rounds of ammunition.

The police conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and found a carrier bag containing another pistol and five rounds of ammunition.

The driver was arrested and will face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The Katlehong SAPS are investigating whether the firearms have been used in the committing of any crimes.
