Promoting a love of mathematics

A love of learning is being promoted in Germiston schools.

SA Teacher, a non-government organisation, is encouraging learning among young pupils.

The organisation concentrates on mathematics and is targeting Grade Four, Five and Six pupils in the Ekurhuleni South District.

Tom Shupikai, a mathematics coach from the organisation, recently visited Alston Primary School, in Leondale, to reward the pupils for their hard work.

The initiative forms part of the Gauteng Department of Educations Gauteng Primary for Language and Mathematics Strategy, and pupils must achieve 60 per cent or above.

“By the end of 2014, we hope that all schools participating in the project will be consistently achieving 60 per cent in mathematics,” Shupikai said.

“We are trying to encourage them to learn by handing out awards to the pupils who achieve the required percentage.

“The pupils are given certificates of achievement, and the top five pupils in each grade are also awarded an educational medal.

“This is a floating medal, which is passed on from child to child, depending on who gets the highest marks.”

Currently, 82 schools in the Ekurhuleni South District are participating in the project.

Some of the Germiston schools taking part include, Ekurhuleni Primary School, Buhle Park Primary School, Leeupoort Primary School, Rondebult Primary School, Thumula Gardens Primary School and Alston Primary School.

The Grade Fours, Fives and Sixes from all the participating schools will also be competing against each other, and the top five in each grade across all the schools will receive a trophy for their performance.

Shupikai said that if it wasn’t for the directors of SA Teacher, Dreyer Lotter and Liezel Bloom, and the entire management team, the project would not be the success it is.
