“The main ideal of Mandela Day is to take action to make the world a better place, an ideal which is very close to the heart of the school children at Alston Primary School,” said Obren Motswane, communications officer for the school club.

“In recognition of the pupils’ strong commitment to the community, we visited the primary school to celebrate Mandela Day with them.”

The award was handed over to the school as part of the club’s campaign, which encourages learners and schools to become more aware of how and where they can make a difference in their own lives by helping others.

“Alston Primary School’s ‘We care’ philosophy was the brainchild of acting principal David Roux, who created an initiative to get the school involved in uplifting Germiston’s local community,” said Motswane.

The initiative encompasses three key activities: the cleaning of their local clinic; managing the school’s feeding scheme and making it available to all underprivileged learners within the school and contributing to the Epworth Children’s Home.

The third pillar involves visiting the home, in Lambton, and providing the residents with entertainment through song and dance activities, as well as donating clothing and food to the home.

“The learners are happy to take on activities that are meant to uplift our community,” said Roux.

“It makes them feel important and motivates them to become better grown-ups one day.”

The school received a Pick n Pay School Club Hero certificate, and groceries courtesy of the Boksburg Pick n Pay Hypermarket, Pick n Pay Corporate and Lucky Star.

“We believe in providing support to schools that uplift their communities and follow in the guidelines Madiba has set for all South Africans,” said Nadine Visser, Pick n Pay School Club account manager.

“We are thankful to the Pick n Pay School Club for celebrating Mandela Day with us and for rewarding us with the Hero Award,” said Roux.

“We will continue with our ‘We care’ philosophy and doing great things for our community.”
