Kwesine Hostel’s children receive a Toy Library

Local children to get the benefit of learning.

In heeding Premier David Makhura’s call to establish an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre at Kwesine Hostel, in Katlehong, government has established a Toy Library.

Gauteng MEC for social development Molebatsi Bopape and Ekurhuleni MMC for health and social development Clr Makhosazana Mabaso recently declared the Toy Library at the hostel open.

The need for the library was identified during the Ntirhisano Roadshow programme aimed at unlocking service delivery challenges throughout the province.

During the launch, Bopape emphasised that a facility that is equipped with colourful toys and books that will stimulate the children’s cognitive development.

Thembi Ngema, mother of two-year-old Bongani, expressed her gratitude for the facility and said it will provide relief while she goes out to seek employment.

“I’m over the moon with joy at the establishment of this facility,” she said.

“It means that I will be able to leave my son here knowing that he safe and taken care of while I go out looking for a job.”

The hostel’s Induna Bongani Ndlovu also expressed his gratitude for the library and stated that the children at the hostel will no longer wander around during the day, but will spend their early childhood years learning and growing towards becoming future leaders.

The library currently has a total of 28 children registered and will accommodate only children between the ages of two and six years old.

It will operate from 9am to 3pm on weekdays.

Five residents from the hostel are currently undergoing an 18-month ECD training course, which will equip them with the necessary knowledge of childcare and education.
