Elsburg wrap up Executive League

Despite the rainy weather, the crease at the Elsburg Eagles Main Oval, in Dinwiddie, was in a good enough state to host the last game of the Executive League, on Sunday.

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club went into the game needing two log points to seal the league and in a heated match against Vosloorus Cricket Club they batted first and set a target of 259 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

The top batsmen were Willie Steyn with 97 runs, Christopher Coetzer with 45 runs and Theuns Herbs with 29 runs.

When Vosloorus took to the pitch to bat they knocked up 104 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs, giving Elsburg a 156-run victory.

“This was our first season in the Executive League and I am certain that if we can gain enough confidence and the same competitive streak such as the Elsburg Eagles and Germiston City Cricket Club, we can prove that we deserve to be in this league and maintain a high position in the log in future seasons,” said Linda Manana, captain of Vosloorus Cricket Club’s Executive League team.

The top bowlers for the Elsburg Eagles were Theuns Herbst with five wickets for 35 runs in 10 overs, Darren van Tonder with two wickets for 28 runs in 10 overs and Len Jacobs with two wickets for 19 runs in five overs.

“We can safely say we have won the league and we have come to the end of a fantastic season,” said Martiens Grobler on behalf of Elsburg Eagles.

Meanwhile, in the Promotion League, Elsburg Eagles continued their winning streak when they took on Boksburg Cricket Club.

Elsburg Eagles batted first and knocked up 300 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs. When Boksburg came into bat they fell short of 74 runs to match the Elsburg Eagles target, only managing 226 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

The top batsmen were Billy Millar with 115 runs, Stan Thorpe with 55 runs and Kobus Black with 42 runs.

The top bowlers were Qumar Hyat with three wickets for 38 runs in 10 overs and Stan Thorpe with two wickets for 39 runs in 10 overs.
