Up-and-down weekend for Elsburg Eagles

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club had a roller-coaster ride with the results of their games this past weekend.

Following a major upset in last week’s edition of the leagues, the Elsburg Eagles sought to redeem themselves when they took on Tembisa Cricket Club, Thokoza Cricket Club and Avion Cricket Club in the weekend fixtures.

First up was the Saturday Second League T20 fixture, which took place on Saturday at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, where the Eagles took on Tembisa.

Tembisa batted first and set a target of 133 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs.

Royan Jacobs managed two wickets for 25 runs in four overs, which made him the best bowler along with teammate Arthur Kolombo, who conceded only 13 runs in his three overs.

After tea, Elsburg took to the crease to bat and hauled in the target in the 15th over, scoring 136 runs for the loss of only five wickets to secure a five-wicket victory.

The top batsmen were Garreth Hann with 50 runs not out and Jason van der Walt with 18 not out.

The Sunday Executive League saw the Eagles going up against Thokoza in a home match at the Elspark Sports Grounds.

Thokoza took to the pitch to bat first, scoring 107 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

The top bowlers were Cristopher Coetzer with four wickets for 11 runs in seven overs and Johan van Gruenen with three wickets for 31 runs in seven overs.

Taking to the pitch to bat, the Eagles made 109 runs for three wickets in 50 overs to clinch a seven-wicket victory.

The top batsmen were Darren van Tonder with 44 not out and Tiaan Smith with 26 runs.

The last match took place at the Eagles’ main oval in Dinwiddie, where the Eagles hosted Avion Cricket Club in the Sunday Promotion League.

The home side were the first to bat and could only manage 88 runs for 10 wickets in their 50 overs.

The top batsmen were Kobus Black with 20 runs and Qamar Hyat with seven runs.

In reply, Avion scored 89 runs for the loss of six wickets to secure a four-wicket victory.
