Successful second league for Central Gauteng Athletics

Successful league meeting despite faulty results system.

The athletics season is back and Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) had a successful start to the season with their league, but it was a rocky start with regard to the new results system.

Their second league meeting, which was recently hosted at the Germiston Stadium, was successful and the results were better managed.

The journey to the finals, which will be held on February 24 at the Germiston Stadium, is well underway. All dates and venues leading to that date, have all been released.

CGA faced a few challenges in recent weeks as the release of meeting results was delayed.

Though the results have been released for the second league meeting, coaches, athletes and facilitators are still awaiting results from the first league event.

“Following a number of challenges and concerns about our results system at the beginning of the season, the CGA Track and Field Commission hosted a Versus Training which was earmarked to help improve our results system.

“Through the training process, we have managed to produce the results for the second league meeting.

“Unfortunately, the first league event results are not yet available as the training facilitator is currently finalising them.

“We will send the results as soon as we have received them.

“We apologise to our athletes and coaches for this inconvenience,” said Mandla Radebe of the CGA.

Athletes from Germiston athletics clubs were in full attendance and performed well at their home stadium.

The Germiston Callies’ boys gave a splendid performance in the long jump event.

Bernhardt du Plessis took second place in the men’s u-18 (youth) long jump final, Pedro Aaron took first place in the men’s u-20 (junior) final, while Avolina Jacobs took second place. In the men’s senior long jump final, Joshua Diamond of Diamond Athletics Club took second place.

Angelique van Niekerk represented Diamond Athletics Club by clinching second place in the women’s u-18 (youth) long jump final.

On the track, Taylor Underhay of Germiston Callies took first place and Julia Lutz of the same club took third place in the women’s u-20 (junior) 100m final.

In the men’s u-20 (junior) 100m final, Dave Mukandi of Germiston Callies managed to grab third place.

Marijke Hoeksema of Germiston Callies represented the club by coming in third in the women’s u-18 (youth) 400m final.

Germiston Callies was again well represented in the track events when Francesca Wesson took second place in the women’s u-20 (junior) 400m final and Melissa Rattray of the same club took third place.

Julia Lutz also shone in another track event, namely the women’s u-20 (junior) 200m final where she took first place.

The next events take place as follows:

• February 10: Valentine’s Day Challenge (women only) will be held at Germiston Stadium.

• February 24: CGA Junior/Youth/Senior championships.
