FIFA World Cup 2014

Get to know the Soccer World Cup Group H

The Soccer World Cup 2014 is currently being hosted in Brazil. Here's a look at Group H top players:

Group H

Belgium: Vincent Kompany

Belgium go into the tournament as one of the more talented squads which includes an exciting attacking mix, namely Nacer Chadli, Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard. In tournaments of the World Cup’s magnitude however, defence is as vital as attack and what Belgium has in attack, Kompany compliments it in defence.

The Manchester City man’s leadership skills and no-nonsense defending will provide a solid foundation for Hazard and co. to attack and hence enhance their chances of progressing to the second round.

Algeria: Madjid Bougherra

The skipper remains a key figure from the defence and his experience and aerial threat will come in handy for Algeria. It was his head that earned the Dessert Warriors a place amongst this year’s elite 32 after all.

Russia: Igor Akinfeev

The goalkeeper played a huge part in helping Fabio Capello’s secure their spot in this summer’s jamboree. Having played all of Russia’s qualification matches, the 28-year-old let in just five goals.

With this group there for the taking, the stopper will be one of the players relied upon from a Russian perspective, to hand his side progression to the next round.

Korea Republic: Lee Chung-yong

Emulating their historic run back in 2002 where they finished fourth as they co-hosted the tournament with Japan, is unlikely to happen this time around. Making the last 16, however, is a realistic possibility which they also achieved four years ago. Coach Hong Myung-bo will be calling-on Lee and his teammates to do the same. Who knows what would happen should they reach the next stage, I just might be made to swallow my words. – @SabeloBoksburg
