Germany: Manuel Neuer
In addition to the talents both Bayern Munich and Germany possess, the imposing goalkeeper, who’s widely regarded as the finest in world football in his position, has provided a solid base to the successes of both his club and country.
Forming the base of a German spine including defender Mats Hummels, Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil and striker Miroslav Klose, the German’s look good to be Brazil’s closest rivals for the title.
And should they go all the way to the final at least, Neuer will have every chance to emulate his legendary predecessor Oliver Khan, who became the first and only goalkeeper in World Cup history to win the Golden Ball for best player.
Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo
Like they did in the do-or-die World Cup qualification tie against Zlatan Ibrahimovich’s Sweden, much of Portugal’s fortunes this summer rest on Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness, who’d been bugged by a niggling leg-muscle injury which has since been reported to have healed.
The Seleccao captain and current Ballon d’Or holder enjoyed yet another record-breaking season in which he shattered Miguel Pauletta’s record (47 goals) to become his country’s all-time leading scorer, before overhauling Lionel Messi’s all-time record (14 goals) for most goals in a single Champions League season.
In good spirits following a historic campaign with Real Madrid in which they finally secured La Decima (tenth Champions League), the 29-year-old will look to continue his record-breaking form for his country.
Ghana: Asamoah Gyan
He must be still wondering what could have been had he put away his penalty in the quarter-final clash against Uruguay at Soccer City four years ago.
Like he did in the last tournament, the Black Stars captain will lead his country’s charge in a quest to go a step further from their 2010 exit stage.
United States: Jozy Altidore
If Jurgen Klinsmann’s men are to have any chance of advancing past their group, Altidore and co. will have to come to the party and produce. His strike in their warm-up match win against Nigeria provided a glimpse of proof that he can produce. -@SabeloBoksburg
