Hirsch’s honours women in business

Local businesswoman comes out on top.

Hirsch’s recently hosted their monthly Ladies’ Networking Morning, with guest speaker Lebo Makhathini.

Makhathini spoke about entrepreneurship and shared her personal story with the women at the event.

“I refused to fail,” she said as she described how she had started as an entrepreneur.

After starting her career as an estate agent, Makhathini is now an independent community developer, entrepreneur, micro start-up mentor, philanthropist, counsellor, robust agent of change – and July’s winner in the Margaret Hirsch Women in Business Achiever Award competition.

At the event, Germiston’s Michelle Mills was introduced as the August winner.

She is a project management professional (PMP), certified Praise Moves instructor (CPI), entrepreneur and author.

She has a passion for helping people to improve their lives and finances, working on the principle of “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day – teach a man to fish and you feed him for life”.

Mills grew up as the youngest of three in a family that knew hard financial times.

To this day, she and her brothers can still cook up 100 things with mince and 1 001 stews.

She doesn’t recall ever going to a restaurant as a child (they didn’t have the cash) and even KFC was beyond the family’s cash-flow.

By the time she was a teenager and her eldest brother took her out to a restaurant, she was so overwhelmed at the idea she made herself sick with excitement and had no appetite by the time they got there.

Business women on the East Rand are encouraged to join the next Ladies’ Networking Morning, at 9am on September 22, at Hirsch’s Meadowdale.

Bring along your banners, business cards and pamphlets and meet local, like-minded businesswomen.
