Mystery surrounds shooting of suspects

Fleeing suspects shot.

The Elsburg SAPS are investigating a case of attempted murder after two alleged suspects were shot.

The police received the complaint at about 11.45am, last Monday, and on their arrival at the scene, they discovered Metro Police officers in attendance.

“The police officers were told by a Metro Police officer that they had chased the suspects, who were driving a charcoal BMW from the R554,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“The driver of the BMW crashed into a traffic light at the corner of Heidelberg Road and Brug Street, in Elsburg.”

Phooko added that when they approached the vehicle the EMPD officers found three men in the car.

“The man in the back seat of the vehicle jumped out and ran into the veld; the man in the front passenger seat also tried to run away, but collapsed next to a lamp pole.

“One of the Metro Police officers pursued the man who had run off, but he escaped,” Phooko said.

While in pursuit, the officer heard shots and returned to the vehicle, where he found that the two occupants of the BMW had been shot.

“The driver was shot in the left thigh and the front seat passenger had been shot through the stomach,” Phooko said.

The driver of the BMW was rushed to Tambo Memorial Hospital in a Metro Police vehicle and the second man was rushed to the same hospital in an ambulance.

“The Elsburg police are investigating a case of attempted murder,” Phooko said.

“It is not known who shot the suspects.”
