Vote for metro’s heroes

Metro heroes need your vote in the Centrum Guardians Awards 2015.

Reservist firefighter Cynthia Maqungu and advanced life support (ALS) paramedic Michael Callow have been named as finalists in the Centrum Guardians Awards 2015.

The two have been selected from hundreds of nominees for their selfless acts of bravery and courage.

The awards were created to honour South African emergency services personnel and to give them the respect that they deserve, as their courage often goes unrecognised and unrewarded.

Cynthia saved three people from a burning shack in the Ramaphosa informal settlement, where she also lives.

As a reservist, who started as a volunteer, she works with the Public Information, Education and Relations (PIER) group, who are trained to assist in informal settlement emergencies.

She used this opportunity to educate her community on fire safety, as well as the importance of having sand or water readily available in their homes in the event of a fire.

Michael has 24 years of service to his name and was active in saving the lives of an innocent bystander and two EMPD officers – one who was shot three times and the other 12 times – during one of the bloodiest shootouts in the metro’s history.

The two EMPD officers were shot during an undercover operation with the National Crime Intelligence and the SAPS K9 Units, in Wadeville, Germiston.

Residents are encouraged to watch their stories and vote for their favourite finalist on the Centrum Guardians website www.centrumguardians.com.

Voting is now open and closes at midday on August 20.

The winner of the competition will walk away with a cash prize and the winner’s base station will also receive prize money that will go towards enhancing their training.
