Five arrested for Zonkezizwe business robbery

EMPD nab five, recover goods after business robbery.

Five men, two of them wielding firearms, stormed into the Rebirth Supermarket in Zonkezizwe at about 5.30pm, last Thursday.

They robbed the business of cash, cigarettes and airtime vouchers.

Upon receiving information about the robbery, EMPD Katlehong precinct officers acted swiftly and arrested all five suspects half-an-hour after the crime was committed.

All the items stolen were recovered.

Two unlicenced firearms with nine live rounds of ammunition were also were seized.

Armed with the description of the five suspects, as well as the description of the getaway car- a green Nissan Almera – the metro police cornered the suspects along the M7/K146 road.

Twenty packets of various brands of cigarettes, airtime vouchers to the value of R10 000, nine cellphones and cash in the form of banknotes and coins were found in the suspects’ vehicle.

The five men were arrested and charged at the Zonkezizwe Police Station with possession of stolen goods, as well as possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition.

The business owner also laid charges of armed robbery and assault against the suspects.

The men, aged between 22 and 25, are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
