Police encourge safety awareness

Be careful and alert – says Elsburg SAPS.

The police are warning residents to increase their safety awareness.

This is according to Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS, who has issued the following safety tips for people to always keep in mind:

  •  Beware of hijackings in your drive-ways.
  •  Ensure that you are not followed home by any suspicious vehicles.
  •  Beware of people pretending to be buying houses. It has been reported that they use this method to gain access to a house in order to steal valuables.
  •  Report any suspicious vehicles and/or people in your street to the police.
  •  Do not leave gates and doors open.
  •  Install burglar proofing in front of windows, as criminals break windows and steal items from inside.
  •  Know your neighbour so they can keep an eye on your premises.
  •  Identify callers at your door before opening it or allowing entrance.
  •  Look for foreign objects placed outside your premises which indicates to criminals which house is easily accessible.
  •  Neighbours should alert each other if something is wrong. They should also switch the lights on in their houses and yards so that criminals know that you and your neighbours are aware of suspicious movement.
