Young runners take to the road

Athletes charge ahead.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA), in partnership with Pick n Pay, hosted a successful leg of the 2015 Pick n Pay Junior Road Running Series, on April 18, in Roodekop.

“A special thank you to Phumula Gardens Secondary School, for granting the usage of their sports grounds,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.

A turnout of 2 050 children attended the race, with the majority taking part in the 2.5km event.

“This is an indication that the purpose of this particular programme is being achieved, as children are increasingly entering the world of athletics at the early age of five,” added Ngema.

“The competitive 5km race saw the likes of Olga Magwagwa, of Ubuhle Athletics Club, maintaining her number one position from yesteryears.

“Magwagwa is one of the future top athletes and Tumelo Lephoto has also grown gradually within the series.”

Ngema also said that parents and friends were cheering the athletes throughout the race.

“CGA thanks parents and the community for showing great support and making the event a success,” she said.

“We would also thank our partner, Pick n Pay, for handing out goodie bags to all the winners on the day, including lunch packs to all finishers of both races.”
