Mayor attempts to ease tensions in informal settlements

Mayor visits Makause informal settlement after attacks on foreign nationals.

After reports of attacks on foreign nationals in the Makause and Marathon informal settlements, on Thursday, the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele, visited Makause.

He spoke to community members and leaders regarding the looting of local shops and the attacks in the area.

Gungubele told the GCN that the situation will be monitored 24-hours a day and a joint operation centre has been set-up, involving the metro, EMPD and SAPS.

“From what we understand from talking to community leaders this is not a collective community movement to attack foreign nationals,” he said.

“It is individuals who are moving around and ordinary community members will be sad to see the foreign nationals go, as they are using their services.”

Gungubele also praised the SAPS and EMPD for their immediate action in stabilising the situation.

He stressed the fact that the situation needs to be monitored and that, if it escalates, they will intervene immediately.

“This is a criminal act and people are using the scapegoat of poverty to commit crime,” he said.
