Great football action

Germiston FC goes head-to-head with Alberton.

After a number of good performances, Germiston City Football Club’s first side hosted Alberton, on Saturday.

“It was a must-win game for the Germiston side,” said the local club’s communications officer, Peter Oliver.

“Germiston, without star midfielder, Scotty Chando, who is down with a lung infection, knew it would be a tough game against a well-disciplined Alberton side.

“Germiston started the game well and settled down to playing good passing football.

”Alberton soaked up the pressure and came back at Germiston midway through the first half, only for the Germiston defence to hold out and keep the score at 0-0 by half-time.”

Germiston’s coaches, Len van Rooyen and Sreten Pavlovich, seemingly had some tough talking to do at half-time, to keep the young Germiston side motivated.

The local boys then came out and showed that they were up to taking the game to Alberton.

“Some exceptional play by Germiston in the early part of the second half put pressure on the Alberton defence and it was only a matter of time before Germiston scored,” said Oliver.

“A good through-ball from Innocent Dlamini to Teboho Musa opened a space for Lebohang “Sixteen” Choekoe to score.

“A fine save by Germiston’s goalkeeper, Brandon Greyling, with five minutes to play, kept Germiston in the game and gave them a well-deserved victory, to earn them their first win of the season.”

The reserve side went down 1-3 to Alberton.

“The third side kicked off their season with a 3-0 win against Bonaero Park,” explained Oliver.

“The juniors kept the Germiston flag flying with all three super league sides winning in their games on Sunday.

“The u-14s beat Olympia 2-0 away, while the u-15s beat Florida Albion 10-4 and the u-17s beat Highlands Park 1-0 away.”
