Over R200-m to be spent on water infrastructure

Ten water reservoirs and water towers to be built in the metro.

The metro hopes to halt water supply interruptions with the implementation of a water management plan, which will see the construction of ten water reservoirs and water towers.

Over R200-million will be spent on the infrastructure, with the date of completion set for 2021.

This comes after water supply woes experienced in Gauteng last year.

“One component in the plan is the exploration of an early warning system, which would be used to indicate dropping water levels in Ekurhuleni’s storage reservoirs and allow for speedy intervention,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gedebe.

“This will be achieved through a telemetric type system that will synchronise all reservoirs in Ekurhuleni, making it easy to divert water from one supply zone to another.

“This process will also include the harmonisation of the metro’s underground infrastructure, so that municipal potable water supply zones are aligned to enable to distribute potable water from one supply zone to another, where practically possible.

“The metro is currently working on constructing two additional water reservoirs, in Palm Ridge and Etwatwa Extension 19, which are expected to be completed in the 2016/2017 financial year.”

These reservoirs form part of the plan:

  •  20Ml reservoir in Brakpan – worth an estimated R25-m.
  •  11Ml reservoir in Masetchaba View – worth an estimated R18-m.
  •  26Ml reservoir at Russel Road – worth an estimated R34-m.
  •  10Ml reservoir in Etwatwa – worth an estimated R20-m.
  •  1.1Ml water tower in Etwatwa – worth an estimated R10-m.
  •  5Ml water tower in Northmead – worth an estimated R32-m.
  •  13Ml reservoir in Dunottar – worth an estimated R23-m.
  •  1Ml water tower in Visagie Park – worth an estimated R10-m.
  •  25Ml reservoirs in Bredell – worth an estimated R31.12-m.

The municipality calls on people to use water sparingly and to fix or report leaking taps and other leaks in their areas.

The metro will augmented these interventions by intensifying the implementation of the water conservation and water demand management programmes.
