Assumption Convent hosts successful mini council induction

School hosts induction of mini mayor.

Assumption Convent hosted the induction of the 2015 Johannesburg Mini Council, last Wednesday.

Eighty young councillors from about 40 schools across Johannesburg gathered at the school.

The Johannesburg mini mayor for 2014, Amy Weinerlein, who is a Grade Eight pupil at Assumption Convent, was the master of ceremonies for the evening.

She said the experience in council had given her new eyes with which she sees the world.

The mini councillors have been involved in over 40 projects throughout the year, all with the aim of striving for a better South Africa.

They lived out their motto: “Through our unity we give back to our community”.

Among many other projects, they raised money for the SA Blind Dogs’ Association, visited the elderly and organised parties for orphans and children with life-threatening diseases.

They took part in the African Feeding Scheme and spent a morning making hundreds of sandwiches to feed hungry children.

Schools across Johannesburg collected around 280 000 Easter eggs which were distributed to various charities and, before the onset of winter, schools collected blankets in order to make many peoples’ lives a little more bearable.

Money was raised to buy sewing machines, so that rehabilitated addicts could be given job opportunities.

A gardening project was started in a community where vegetable beds were planted to assist in feeding the hungry, and a group of councillors got their hands dirty, cleaning polluted rivers.

Weinerlein said: “It was a collective effort and without the support of the schools, these moments would not have been possible.

“The Assumption Convent Primary School pupils were so generous and eager to be part of making somebody else’s life a little easier.”

The new mini mayor, Hlumelo Notshe, from Crawford College Sandton, beamed as he was inducted and promised that he would give his all in leading the council in 2015.
