Charge against crèche may be changed to assault

Katlehong police awaiting doctor’s report.

The GCN recently reported that a case of child negligence had been opened against a day care centre, in Katlehong, following allegations that an 18-month-old toddler’s feet were burnt at the centre.

Capt Maga Ndobe, communications official for the Katlehong SAPS gave the GCN more details on the ongoing investigation.

“We are continuing our investigation into the case of child neglect,” he said.

“This comes after claims that a baby boy was, on Thursday, February 19, burnt with boiling water at a crèche in the Mavimbela section of Katlehong.

“It is alleged that a baby’s mother was called to the crèche when a baby cried when he supposed to wear shoes.

“At the crèche no one could explain what had happened to the baby.

“The mother claimed that doctors at the clinic noticed that the baby’s legs, as well as his feet, were burnt.

“Both legs were bandaged before he was taken home.

“We are currently awaiting a doctor’s report, so that we can confirm whether the investigation should be changed from child negligence to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.”
