Callies’ athlete instructs

Kayla Gilbert is the new gym instructor at Hoërskool Goudrif.

Germiston Callies’ Kayla Gilbert is the new instructor at Hoërskool Goudrif’s gym.

“The gym was closed last year due to the instructor leaving and there was nobody to take over,” said Germiston Callies and Hoërskool Goudrif athletics coach, Stephané Kotzé.

Kotzé said Gilbert will also be helping with the school’s athletics.

“Kayla has gained a lot of experience and continues to do so as she is an athlete and I personally believe that she will be very useful to these youngsters and give them the best advice,” he said.

Gilbert said she is excited to give back to the community.

“I take this as an opportunity for me to give back to the community.

“I will be taking my experience and knowledge as an athlete and sharing it with the aspiring athletes,” she said.

“What also makes me happy is that I only started on Wednesday, and already we have had over 40 students signing up for the gym.”

Gilbert said at the moment it is only open to the students.

“The principal said as time goes by we might open it to the community, as well,” said Gilbert.

“I will mainly be helping with fitness and healthy diets and I am looking at having Pilates classes.”

“We are open from 2pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.”

Gilbert said the gym’s operation times don’t clash with her own training times.

“I train in the morning so I have enough time to relax and prepare for the gym.”

“I am excited and happy to be doing what I love while giving back.”
