Will lights be kept on during the State of the Nation Address?

National power grid still under severe strain - says Eskom.

Eskom is under pressure to keep the lights on during the President’s State of the Nation Address scheduled to take place this evening.

It was reported this morning that the company had hoped to have two of it’s offline generators back online this afternoon.

However, the national grid will remain under strain even with the extra generating capsity.

Load shedding has been implemented three times within this week, the latest bout ending at 10pm last night (Wednesday).

Khulu Phasiwe, spokesman for Eskom, said that the company continues to closely monitor the power system.

“We’re urging all customers to continue to assist us where possible so we can continue to reduce the severity or the duration of load shedding,” he said.

Several of Eskom’s generators have been taken offline for maintenance, this paired with the current heatwave has made keeping up with electricity demand more difficult.

Phasiwe said, “The strain on the power system means that consumers could be load shed twice a day depending on the schedules and who your supplier is.”
