Water supply depends on electricity

Can nothing be done to keep the water running in Sunnyridge and Gerdview?

The Germiston City News has received a number of calls from disgruntled Gerdview and Sunnyridge residents.

The problem that has them all up-in-arms is the fact that whenever there is a power outage in the area they are left without water.

The GCN approached the metro to confirm if this was caused by the locations of the area’s reservoirs and the need for power to pump the water to residents.

We also asked what the metro plans to do to put a stop to this problem, as it has been on-going for years and residents are running out of patience.

Spokesman for the metro Themba Gadebe released the following statement:

“The water supply in Sunnyridge and Gerdview is done through electrically operated centrifugal pumps.

“Water is pumped from the nearby water reservoir to the network and then into the water tower.

“The pump station relies entirely on electricity for operation, hence a generator was installed to assist during power outages.

“The generator, however, failed due to mechanical challenges, resulting in its failure to supply power.

“Erwat technicians are currently waiting for equipment to start with repairs, after investigating and identifying the cause of water outages in the areas.”
