Local rivals go head-to-head

Football action in friendly match.

Luso Africa FC’s u-15 team faced their local rivals, Burning Stars, in a friendly match at Hattingh Park, on Saturday.

“We decided on the friendly as, although practice has resumed, players are still rusty from the holidays, and we just wanted to give them some competition to get them back on track,” said Luso Africa FC’s u-15 team coach Sipho Ndawonde.

Although Burning Stars tried their best, the game was one sided from the onset, with Luso leading the way with ball possession and goals.

“Both teams are still a bit out of practice but my boys are good, which is also why I am predicting a good season ahead for these boys,” said Ndawonde.

In the first half, Luso scored three goals which rattled Burning Stars, causing them to play full on defense.

Luso continued with their robust attack and punished Stars by scoring three more goals with minutes into the second half.

Stars retaliated with one goal forcing Luso to extend their lead by scoring two more goals.

Luso finished the match with another goal seconds before the referee blew the end game whistle.

The team walked away victorious with a 9-1 win.

“We lost, but the boys didn’t give up. They kept going and kept the spirit until the end. All we have to do now is go back to the drawing board and continue with practice,” said Burning Stars FC’s u-15 coach Killer Ncobo.

“We have re-opened for the year and welcome players interested in joining the club.”

The club is based in Makause informal settlement.

Ndawonde also told GCN that he is looking at starting a new programme.

“I will be teaching the skill of football to those who can’t play,” said Ndawonde.

“You often find that coaches don’t have time to teach children as we are busy with tournaments and leagues. So once we see that the players are ready from this programme, we will put them in the teams respectively.”

Ndawonde said he is looking at hosting the programme on Monday and Friday, but the number of those interested will determine the days.
