Successful maths workshop at Sekgutlong Primary

Grade Five students get dictionaries.

The My Maths Buddy One Book One Learner Project delivered two “How to use My Buddy” workshops to Grade Five students at Sekgutlong Primary School in Katlehong, recently.

The students were presented with copies of the My Maths Buddy dictionary during the “How to Use My Maths Buddy” workshops.

“This was made possible by CompAir South Africa, part of the Gardner Denver Group of companies and facilitated by Madeleine Colyn, marketing manager and CSI lead,” said the public relations and media consultant for the project, Philippa Roborg-Sondergaard.

“This was a follow-up of the donation of books by CompAir in 2012 which are being used by the current Grade Six students.”

“With the results we have achieved using the My Maths Buddy with the Grade Sixes, we are looking forward to seeing the changes expected for the Grade Fives,” said the principal of Sekgutlong Primary, Olga Maja.

“We highlight the value and purpose of maths and that it is a language,” said Roborg-Sondergaard.

“The My Maths Buddy dictionary increases the users’ understanding of the maths language by helping them with clear definitions and examples, as a result their vocabulary increases and so brings a higher level of understanding and ability.

“Schools where the One Book One Learner Project has delivered the workshops are showing an overall improvement in maths with the students who have received these books and are using them.”

The workshops were followed by a graduation ceremony where each Grade Five student received a certificate which was handed to them by Gardner Denver’s human resources business partner for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Teija Saari, who was visiting from Germany.

The students were then treated to cake after the graduation.

Maja presented certificates of appreciation to CompAir and the One Book One Learner Project to say thank you for the help they are receiving and the results being achieved with the use of the My Maths Buddy dictionary.

“The provision of maths dictionaries to the school for the second year was based on improved maths results from the dictionaries provided last year and our belief in the importance of a good foundation for mathematics,” said business director of CompAir SA, Marc Willmers.

“My thanks to all those who were involved in this and we wish the school continued success with their maths marks.”

The One Book One Learner Project was initiated by Education Africa to help get copies of My Maths Buddy into the hands of every student from disadvantaged backgrounds and the organisation works with many companies to make this a reality.
